MAIN LINE OF ACTION

Tomatea, a stern, instructing father figure, starting in the first scene of the plot, tries to protect and prosper his people, and in the process risks his life and his status and becomes a forgiving, tolerant, leader, bringing out a theme of being willing to allow others the freedom of failure and growth.

SEQUENCES

Tomatea tries to defend his people against an attacking tribe, but many lives are lost and his son's wife is captured.

To prevent being conquered, Tomatea tries to convince his people  to build ocean-going canoes and set across the sea to "the land of the Long White Cloud", but dissent ensues among some of the people, some failures of ship construction, and he must address a host of life-or-death issues, and eventually most are willing to go along.

They launch four canoes together, then the last four, lead by Tomatea he tries to navigate the ocean and find Aotearoa--the land of the Long White Cloud, and they lose people along the way and eventually arrive at Aotearoa--New Zealand.
